Basil Mint
Basil
Basil is a highly aromatic herb widely used in Southeast Asian and Mediterranean cuisine. The plant has bright green, tender leaves with a sweet and slightly peppery flavor. Basil is commonly used to season soups, salads, stir-fries, and sauces, and is valued for its vitamins, antioxidants, and essential oils.
- Availability
Basil can be harvested year-round in tropical and subtropical regions, with peak growth during the warm and rainy seasons.
- Storage Guidelines
Transport & Storage: Basil should be stored at 7–10˚C with high humidity to maintain freshness and prevent wilting.
In Store: It is best displayed in refrigerated or cool, humid sections to keep leaves vibrant and crisp.
- Planting and Harvest
At the farm
Basil grows well in warm, sunny locations with well-drained soil. The plant is propagated from cuttings or seeds and can be ready for harvest within 4–6 weeks after planting.
Harvesting is done by hand, picking tender leaves and shoots. Regular harvesting encourages new growth and maintains a continuous supply.
After harvest, basil is sorted to remove yellowed or damaged leaves, then bundled or packed in cartons, typically 3–5 kg, ready for distribution and sale.
