Durian

Durian is often called the "king of fruits" in Southeast Asia. It is famous for its large size, spiky outer shell, and strong aroma that divides opinions. Inside, the creamy yellow flesh is soft, rich, and sweet, with a unique flavor that many people describe as a combination of sweet custard and almonds.

  • Availability

Durian is mainly available from May to September, depending on the region. In some tropical countries, smaller harvests are also possible at other times of the year.

  • Storage Guidelines

Transport & Storage: Durians should be transported and stored at 12–15˚C to maintain freshness and flavor. Proper ventilation during storage is essential due to the fruit’s strong aroma.

In Store: Durians are best displayed in a cool, well-ventilated area. For convenience, they are sometimes offered pre-packed or in sealed containers.

  • Planting and Harvest

At the orchard

Durian trees grow in tropical climates and can reach heights of 25–40 metres. They usually start producing fruit after 5–7 years and can remain productive for decades.

The fruits take about 3–5 months to ripen after flowering. Harvesting is mostly done when the fruits naturally drop from the tree, or they are carefully cut to avoid damage.

After harvesting, durians are sorted by size, weight, and quality. They are then packed in cartons or baskets, ready for transport and export.
