- Planting and Harvest

At the Orchard

Lime trees are usually grown from seedless varieties. Since they don’t have seeds, farmers use cuttings grafted onto rootstocks to create new plants. In their first year, the young trees are kept in tunnel greenhouses for protection, where they grow strong before being moved out into the open fields.

After about two years, the trees begin to produce their first fruits. If they are not pruned, lime trees can grow as tall as 6–7 metres. For easier harvesting, growers keep them trimmed to around 2.5 metres, so the fruits can be hand-picked and placed into crates without difficulty.

Once harvested, the limes are taken to a central hall. Here, they are carefully sorted for quality and then packed into bulk boxes, ready for shipment.
