Limnophila
Limnophila, also known as rau nhút, is a popular aquatic vegetable in Vietnam, commonly used in soups and stir-fried dishes. The plant has soft, green stems that grow upright or slightly leaning, with small leaves, a mild fragrance, and a refreshing taste. It is rich in vitamins and minerals, making it a favored ingredient in Southern Vietnamese cuisine.
- Availability
Limnophila can be harvested year-round, thriving especially during the rainy season and in wet, flooded fields.
- Storage Guidelines
Transport & Storage: Limnophila should be stored at 7–10˚C with high humidity to maintain freshness and prevent wilting and nutrient loss.
In Store: Limnophila is best displayed in refrigerated or cool, humid areas to keep the leaves green and crisp.
- Planting and Harvest
At the farm
Limnophila grows well in shallow water or wet soil conditions. The plant is propagated via cuttings or seeds and can be ready for harvest 3–4 weeks after planting.
Harvesting is done by hand, cutting tender stems to ensure the freshest parts are collected. Frequent harvesting encourages new shoots and maintains a continuous supply.
After harvest, Limnophila is sorted to remove wilted or damaged leaves, then packed in bundles or cartons, typically 5–10 kg, ready for distribution and sale.
