Sugarcane

Sugarcane

Sugarcane is a tall, perennial grass cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions for its sweet stalks, which are used to produce sugar, juice, and other products. The stalks are fibrous, juicy, and range in color from green to reddish-brown depending on the variety. Sugarcane is also valued for its biofuel and industrial applications.

- Availability

Sugarcane can be harvested year-round in tropical climates, with peak production during the main growing season.

- Storage Guidelines

Transport & Storage: Sugarcane stalks should be stored in a cool, dry place, ideally between 12–16˚C, to maintain freshness and prevent fermentation or mold.

In Store: Best stored in ventilated areas or displayed freshly cut for juice extraction; avoid prolonged storage as the sugar content can degrade.

- Planting and Harvest

At the farm

Sugarcane grows well in warm, sunny climates with well-drained, fertile soil. The crop is propagated using stem cuttings, known as “setts,” and typically matures in 10–12 months.

Harvesting is usually done manually or mechanically by cutting the stalks close to the ground. After harvest, the stalks are cleaned, sorted, and bundled for transport or processing.
