Wing Bean
Winged Bean
Winged bean, also known as four-angled bean, is a tropical legume recognized for its unique appearance and nutritional value. The pods are bright green with four distinct wing-like edges, giving the bean its name. Almost every part of the plant is edible: the pods, leaves, flowers, and even the tuber roots. The pods are tender and crunchy, with a flavor similar to green beans, making them popular in stir-fries, soups, and salads.
- Availability
Winged beans are mainly available year-round in tropical climates, with peak harvests during the rainy season.
- Storage Guidelines
Transport & Storage: Winged beans should be transported and stored at 8–12˚C with moderate humidity. Proper cooling helps maintain crispness and prevents rapid wilting.
In Store: Winged beans are best displayed in the refrigerated fresh produce section to preserve freshness.
- Planting and Harvest
At the farm
Winged bean plants thrive in hot and humid tropical climates. They are climbing vines that can reach up to 3–4 metres in height, usually supported by trellises. The plants begin to produce pods within 2–3 months after planting.
The pods are harvested by hand when they are young and tender, typically 15–20 cm long. Frequent harvesting encourages more growth and ensures the pods remain crisp and edible.
After harvest, winged beans are sorted for size and quality, then packed in cartons or crates, usually 5–8 kg, ready for distribution and export.
